Bihar Government launches new plan for child labour

Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi inaugurated state government’s action plan for the eradication of child labour and rehabilitation of rescued children at SK Memorial Hall in Patna on November 4, 2009.
Speaking on the occasion Modi said under the action plan, specific steps for schooling, rehabilitation, motivation, awareness and stringent enforcement of law would be taken for elimination, release and rehabilitation of child labour.

He expressed unhappiness over the manner in which the centrally-sponsored scheme, National Child Labour Project (NCLP), was being executed in the state.Modi demanded that the Centre send the money allocated for the scheme to the state government instead of directly sending to districts to ensure proper utilisation of funds.

Bihar Labour Minister Awadhesh Narayan Singh, pricincipal secretary (Labour Resource Department, Government of Bihar) Vyasji were present on the occasion.

Unicef, India deputy head Kumihiko Kris Hirabiyashi and ILO’s India head Preet Verma threw light on the work done by their organistaions to this regard.

Speaking on the occasion, Bachpan Bachao Andolan founder Kailash Satyarthi said that his organization had established 250 Balmitras across the state.
