Tibetan spiritual leader Karmapa Ugyen Trinely Dorji reached Patna on February 26, 2011 on his way to Bodh Gaya. Karmapa was recently in news relating to huge foreign currency haul from his monastery.

Higher education commission in Bihar soon

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar held a high-level meeting with the Minister and officials of the Human Resources Development Department in Patna on February 26, 2011. Bihar Government's HRD Minister PK Shahi and Department's Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh were present in the meeting. The meeting has decided to create a new higher education commission for the appointment of teachers in Universities.

Patna Medical College celebrates 86th foundation day


Bihar Governor Debanand Konwar inaugurated the 86th foundation day of the Patna Medical College in Patna on February 25, 2011. Speaking on the occasion, Konwar said more medical centres should be set up in rural areas with adequate doctors in place to address some basic ailments.
Bihar Health Minister Ashwini Choubey urged the doctors to go and work in rural areas.
BJP state unit president Dr CP Thakur was present on the occasion.

Bihar CM expresses displeasure on Railway budget

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his disappointment on the Railway budget with regard to 'lack of attention' on safety measures and said adequate attention should be paid in this regard. Kumar was talking to reporters in Patna on February 25, 2011. He also said that there were no concrete proposals for Bihar.

No hike in railway fares keeps passengers happy


Union Railway Minister Mamataa Banerjee presented Railway budget for the year 2011-12 in the Parliament in New Delhi on February 25, 2011. Railway passengers at Patna Junction took their time off to hear and view the budget speech of Railway Minister on hanging TVs located in different platforms. Passengers finally had a sigh of relief as there was no hike in railway fares.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi presents annual budget for 2011-12

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi presented Rs 65,325.87 crore annual budget for 2011-12 in the State Assembly in Patna on February 25, 2011.

Road construction, human resources development, health and water resources will be the major part of the expenditure.

Modi, who is also state Finance Minister, proposed to raise value added tax on certain goods in schedule three from 4 per cent to 5 per cent, while on various consumer goods such as TV, refrigerator and automobiles from the present 12.5 per cent to 13.5 per cent.

He said road construction, human resources development, health and water resources would remain to be the priority areas in 2011-12 and announced an allocation of Rs 5,075 crore, about 21.15 per cent of the state plan of Rs 24000 crore.
