Power crisis ignites violent protests in Bihar

The broken window panes of New Delhi-Patna Garib Rath Express, which arrived in Patna Junction on April 28, 2011, showed the ugly face of people's protest against power and water crisis in Ara, about 50 km from Patna. Police opened fire, lobbed teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge in Ara when thousands of people took the streets to vent their ire on prevailing power and water crisis. Protesters also damaged Railway property at Ara Junction and blocked the up and down lines of the East Central Railway for several hours. Protests against electricity crisis were also reported from Gopalganj, Gaya, Bhagalpur and Patna City.
