Stall of wooden craft is centre of attraction in Bihar Utsav

Patna, March 29, 2010: The unique features of art and crafts in Bihar are the intrinsic beauties and great creativeness. These creative beauties have been preserved in various forms like in ancient stone, wooden structures, grass-clothes, lacquer and metal-wares. These creativenesses have been exhibited in Bihar Utsav at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.


All the stalls of Art and Craft of Bihar in Bihar Utsav have attracted visitors from there works, but Stall No. 23 of wooden artist Lal Babu Sharma is centre of attraction by its creativeness and display of unique works on woods. There are so many arts of wood craving have been exhibited on this stall like a wood carving of a women who is on bank of river after bath, Jivivsa-a willingness for living, Atikraman- an wooden works to save environment, wall hanging, pen stand, table tops and many more.

Lal babu said that kumhar woods is suitable for wooden arts, apart from this he used sagwan, sakhua and other woods for this works.


Lal Babu Sharma said wood craving as a form of art and craft was very famous during Mauryan times. During such period wooden houses were made. This ancient art has not only been preserved but also has been converted into a means of livelihood by artists of Bihar which in one of the few places where wood carving work is still practiced.

Bihar is one of the few places where the wood carving and inlay work is done with wall plaques, table tops, pens and paper cutters being from wood and inlaid with diverse materials ranging from metal, ivory, stag horn to chips of different wood. Presently Patna is well known for manufacturing of craved doors and windows.

Bihar's craftsmen have excelled in manufacturing artistic goods which have great demands in local and international market. The fine skill and perfection of Bihari craftsmen is clearly manifested from various archeological excavations in Kumhrar, Bulandibagh, Nalanda and other places. Pottery, wooden articles, metal wares, stone wares, jewelry, lacquer works, kashida, sikki and moonj wares, wooden and clay toys, zari, artistic textile fabrics and printing on cloth are some of the contemporary crafts of Bihar which are known in Indian as well as international markets for their artistic beauties and innovations.

Sharda Sinha captivates audience in New Delhi

New Delhi, March 27, 2010: It was a rocking and memorable evening at Pragati Maidan in Bihar Utsav 2010, where Delhi rocked on performances of Bihar Kokila Padmashri Sharda Sinha on the evening of March 26, 2010 at Hansdhwani Theater.

Programme was started by lighting the lamp by Rameshwer Singh, IDC, Department of Industry, Govt. of Bihar and Anshuli Arya, MD, BIADA, Govt of Bihar. Vivek Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department of Youth Art and Culture, Govt. of Bihar was also present on this occasion.

Sharda Sinha’s melodious voice and igniting performance, was an instant hit with crowd. Sharda Sinha started the programe with her famous patriotic song Maiya Bharti Pukarela Jawan Babua Tora Hathawa Meai Deshwa Ke Shaan Babuwa….. Audience enjoyed her songs like Paniya ke Jahaj Se Paltaniya Bani Ahiya Piya lene ahiya ho Sinduri Bengal Ke… , Kahe to Se Sajani …….Hamaar Jogiya….., Sutal Chaliya Baba Ke Bhawanwa…., Barh Re Jatan Se….., Sun ho pardesiya…, Sasuji Se Lutri…, Apna Sajaniya Ke…., Babul Jo Tumne Sikhaya…., Dulhee Dhire Dhire Chalio……, Khapraila Par Bolela….. and many more. Audience enjoyed on every performs of Sharda Sinha. Undoubtedly, this two hour long Cultural event on Bihar Utsav will remember for a long time to audience of Delhi.

Famous dancer Neelam Chaudhary also enthralled the audience by her dance drama – Ganga. This dance drama was based on the message to keep Ganga clean and pollution free.

“We are proud that I am a Bihari and you all fell proud on your Bihari Culture”, said Sharda Sinha in her speech. She said Bihar Utsav was one of the best medium to spread Bihar history, culture and development in India and all over world.

Bihar Utsav showcases the heritage and history of Bihar

New Delhi: Fifteen-day long Bihar Utsav organizing by Govt. of Bihar on Foundation day of Bihat in Hall No. 15 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi tried to showcase the heritage and history of Bihar and its onward journey in the contemporary phase.

As we enter the premises, we pass through Barabar caves situated in Jehanabad District, which is the oldest surviving rock cave in India mostly dating from Mauryan period 322-185 BC. These caves were used by Budhist and Jain ascetics. On the left, stage has been set up against the back drop of Nalanda University, where one can go back in time and also enjoy the cultural programme to be held every evening. The Nalanda University is one of the first great universities in recorded history and has been a Buddhist centre of learning from 427 to 1197 AD.

The scene under the papal tree depicts a famished and bone thin Budha accepting pysum from Sujata. Sujata was a maiden, who offered Buddha, a bowl of Milk porridge after he had given up the path of asceticism following 6 year of extreme austerities.

The right side depicts the scene when Veer Kunwar Singh one of the leaders of Indian rising of 1857, in the last battle fought in 1858, while crossing the Ganga, was badly wounded, he served his injured limb and flung it into the river Ganga as his last offering to the Ganga and he died next day.

It also carries the sculpture of peer Ali Khan, who was actively involved in the first war of impendence of 1857 in Patna division. The entry to the main hall is through a model of Bodhi Temple the most important place for Buddhist. This temple is one of shrines of the 84000 shrines erected by king Ashoka. This is an eye catching land mark where the famous papal tree is situated, the place where Buddha attained nirvana.

A Bihari cuisine corner has been set up with in premises which will sell mouth watering dishes, all from Bihar, The main Bihar foods are Litti, Paratha, Sattu, Seekh Kabab, Sawai, Kheer, Keema, Curries, Khichdi and Halwa.

Bihar Utsav begins in New Delhi

New Delhi: Modern State of Bihar was carved out of Bengal Presidency on 22 March 1912. To commemorate this historical event and promote a sense of pride and belongingness among the people, government has decided to celebrate the foundation day on 22nd March as “Bihar Divas” every year.

Gala functions would be held, starting right from the panchayat levels to state level in Patna and it is going to make a mark even at the national level in New Delhi. For the first time, Government is organizing handloom and handicrafts exhibition cum fair from March 22, 2010 to April 05, 2010 at Hall No. 15 Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. This Exhibition would also showcase Bihar’s historical and cultural heritage.

The Industry Department, Govt. of Bihar has been given the charge for this, while BIADA shall be hosting the event. In addition to depicting great cultural and historical heritage of Bihar, the great development strides that Bihar is taking in the current scenario, will also are adequately presented.

For the attraction of the coming visitor, there are around 40 stalls of handloom and handicrafts. Bhagalpuri skill, Mithila painting, Siki products, Stone made elephant of Bhbhua Stone, Jewelry from ship of Mahesi, Motihari Terrocota products, Jute products like Jute Jewelry, Tikuli art, Nepura silk of Nalanda and famous handloom bed sheets of Biharsharif, are some of the great attractions at this festival.

Authentic Bihari cuisine will also be served in the fair. Hotel Maurya, Patna has been assigned to this job. On this occasion Department of Art and Cultural will organized the cultural festivities. In addition to daily program at the hall, a special cultural event will be held on March 26 at Hansh Dhwani Theater of Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, where Padamshree Sharda Sinha the famous singer of Bihar, Propulary known as Bihar Kokila, will perform.
