Bihar CM holds meeting with Bill Gates Foundation team members

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation members hold meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna on August 29, 2009.

The eight-member Gates Foundation team visited several flood-hit areas in Bihar before meeting Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at a high-level meeting.

The members of the team discusssed various health schemes. It is learnt that the team was impressed with the success rate of the health schemes launched in Bihar.
The team, which arrived on August 26, visited flood-affected Madhepura and Samastipur districts to explore areas where the foundation could extend help. It is already working in the state through an NGO in the field of visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar).

Bihar Government honours 170 sportspersons

Bihar Government on August 29, 2009 honoured 170 sportspersons with cash awards and citations to commemorate the National Sports Day, the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyanchand. In a glittering function held at Sri Ksrishna memorial hall, Bihar government’s chief secretary Anup Kumar Mukherjee gave away the awards.

The indefinite strike by the junior doctors of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) entered the second day on August 28, 2009.The junior doctors struck work on August 27, 2009 demanding introduction of salary system instead of giving them stipend.
Meanwhile, Bihar Health Minister Nand Kishore Yadav described the strike as uncalled for and appealed to the junior doctors to resume work as the state government had in principle, agreed to increase their stipend from Rs 13,500 per month to Rs 25,000 per month.

“Centre's criteria for computation below poverty line (BPL) families are not correct and it has many shortcomings which need to be given a re-look", he said.

Patna to have second airport at Bihta

Airport Authority of India (AAI) chairman V P Agrawal met Bihar Chief minister Nitish Kumar and discussed issues pertaining to development of Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Raxaul and Jogbani airports

"We discussed with the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar about the development of our five airports in Bihar including an alternative option of having another airport in Patna near Bihta," Agrawal said.

He said that AAI was working out on other option with regard to the development of Patna airport near Bihta which belonged to the air force. Bihta airfield has a runway of 8200 feet which can be increased to 9000 feet easily making international flight operations smooth.

“We will talk with the defence authorities in this regard and seek clearance from them for handing over the airfield to us (AAI) and I don't think that there will be any difficulty for defence in giving the land," he said.

AIPWA activsits stage rally to protest atrocities against women

All India Progressive Women's Association organised a rally in Patna on August 27, 2009 to voice their concern and draw the attention of the state government over atrocities against women.
AIPWA activists from different districts of Bihar participated in the rally.
Citing a Bihar Police department data that stated icrease in rape cases to 1,555 in 2007 from 1084 in 2006 and dowry deaths to 1172 in 2007 from 1084 in 2006, AIPWA leaders said the present NDA government led by Nitish Kumar had failed to provide security and empowerment to women.

Swine flu fear

NCP to contest from six seats in Bihar Assembly bypolls

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary Tariq Anwar said NCP had decided to contest from six of the 18 assembly seats in the bypolls on September 10 and September 15.
Anwar was addressing a press conference in Patna on August 26, 2009.

Turning to Maharashtra he said talks were underway between the NCP and Congress leaders to affect a perfect seat-sharing accord for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Tariq said the leaders of the two parties were holding talks on the issue of a perfect seat-sharing accord in Maharashtra “to stop the communal forces from coming to power.”

Ruling out the possibility of the NCP merging with the Congress, he alleged that a section of Congressmen was spreading rumours in this connection.

Seminar on "Role of media in polio eradication"

UNICEF, Bihar branch, organised a seminar on "Role of media in polio eradication" in Patna on August 26, 2009.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Hemant Shukla, national programme coordinator of WHO, said the polio virus spreaded to other parts of the country from Bihar in 2008 and in the first few months of 2009

"The virus was exported from Bihar to other parts as genes found in the polio virus of Bihar and other parts are similar," he said.

A total of 236 cases of polio have been detected in the country so far this year, of which 181 cases were found in Uttar Pradesh, 49 in Bihar, four in Delhi and one each in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, he said.
So far 49 cases of polio cases have come to light in Bihar, of which eight were from the Kosi region, he added.

Two killed in Nawada bridge collapse

Two persons were killed and 31 others injured, when a 80-year-old road bridge on Sakri river collapsed near Kadirganj Bazaar in Bihar's Nawada district on August 25, 2009.

Two dumpers, a bullock-cart loaded with foodgrains and a van carrying passengers, besides a motorcyclist fell down as the bridge over Nawada-Jamui road caved in, killing two persons on the spot.

Three injured persons had been referred to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) in critical conditions while others were being treated at a government hospital in Nawada.
The bridge was built in 1929.
