50 teachers hurt in police lathicharge

Police resorted to lathicharge and burst teargas shells to disperse thousands of contract (fixed pay) school teachers who were on their way to the Vidhan Sabha premises in Patna on July 10, 2009. Over 50 agitators were injured some of them seriously in the incident.

The teachers were demanding among other things regularisation of their services and pay-parity with other government teachers.

Thousands of primary school teachers, who began their Vidhan Sabha march from Gandhi Maidan, got enraged when their procession was stopped near R-block. It sparked off the pitch battle between police and agitators. Some of the agitators hurled stones at the police resulting in minor injuries to some of them.

Police retaliated by throwing stones at the demonstrators triggering a clash as scores of agitators crossed the iron barricades and surged towards the Vidhan Sabha. Police caned several teachers forcing them to take refuge in the adjoining Harding Park as anti-riot vehicle repeatedly fired teargas shells after water cannons failed to disperse the violent crowd.
