Taking up the moral responsibility for his party JD(U) recent Lok Sabha elections debacle, Nitish Kumar quit as Chief Minister of Bihar and nominated his party's Makhdumpur (Jehanabad) MLA Jitan Ram Manjhi as the new Chief Minister of Bihar in Patna on May 19, 2014. Kumar was given the right to choose his successor by the JD(U) legislature party earlier in a meeting. Kumar along with Jitan Ram Manjhi, JD(U) national president Sharad Yadav and JD(U) state president Vashisht Narayan Singh met Bihar Governor Dr DY Patil and staked the claim to form the next government in the state.
