President Pratibha Patil inaugurated the Centenary year celebrations of Bihar Legislative Council in Patna on March 22, 2011. Bihar Governor Debanand Konwar, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his cabinet colleagues and members of Bihar Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council were present on the occasion.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also felicitated the President Pratibha Patil by presenting her a memento.
Addressing the function, President lauded the Bihar government’s efforts to promote women education and welfare.
The President said she believed that education is essential for development and legislators should make such laws and plans which are development oriented.
She expressed the hope that that legislators in the state will work along with Panchayati Raj institutions. “Bihar is one of the first states in the country to have given 50 per cent reservation to women in Panchayati Raj institutions. I congratulate the Bihar government for this,” he said.
Referring to the economic growth in Bihar, Patil said the state government should step up efforts to bring growth in the industrial and agriculture sectors.
President also hailed the glorious history of Bihar which is the birth place of several legendary personalities who made pioneering contributions to various walks of life, including science, culture, religion and in the field of governance.
Addressing the function Chief Minister Nitish Kumar urged the Centre to accord a special status to Bihar to speed up economic development in the state.
